The Meaning Behind What If 601
This What If takes a look at the weight of thoughts.
It opens with a play on phonics and layered meaning. We see
“wait,” which carries the connotation of holding, pausing and
thoughts moving at a certain speed. It is also a double entendre
pointing to the weight of thoughts—the heaviness they can carry—
but also the speed at which some minds operate.
This leads into the second line: “you could not pay cent,”
phonetically landing on the sound of the word “patient.”
This connects the speed of mind with the difficulty of being
patient with thoughts.
It also plays on monetary value through the phrase
“a penny for your thoughts.” The thoughts may come so quickly,
or carry such complexity, that we cannot simply pay cent for them
or easily explain them.
The latter half says, “would fee bell or prow is ships heading.”
“Fee bell” contains the hidden phonics of “feeble,” while also
continuing the fee and pay-cent theme.
“Prow is” becomes a phonetic doorway into “prowess,” while also
literally pointing toward the prow of a ship. The prow symbolizes
force, direction and the leading edge of movement.
This connects to the heading of the ship, while also relating
to the head as the place of thought, direction and mental clarity.
Summed up, this What If explores the weight and speed of thought,
the difficulty of bearing or explaining it, and the choice between
becoming feeble under its pressure or using mental force with
prowess to cut a clear course through the waters of the mind.
Expanded Interpretation
Directing the Force of Thought
Thoughts can create real emotional and physical pressure even
when their content has not become reality. A fast-moving mind
may struggle to pause long enough to evaluate each thought before
the next one arrives.
The artwork transforms mental weight into navigational force.
The same energy that once pulled downward becomes the power used
to drive the vessel forward.
The ship does not eliminate the storm. It develops a heading.
The prow does not deny resistance. It divides the resistance
and creates a route through it.
